When should I apply for Medicare?
Generally, it’s best to apply for Medicare benefits 3 months before your 65th birthday. If you are already receiving Social Security benefits, you will automatically be enrolled into Medicare Part A and B without any application. But if you aren’t yet receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll want to make sure that you apply for Medicare.
Are there Penalties for enrolling late?
If you don’t have health insurance that is considered creditable, and you don’t enroll in Medicare Part A, B, and Part D when you first become eligible, you will incur permanent penalties.

I’ve applied for Medicare, when will I receive my card in the mail?
If you are automatically enrolled into Medicare, you should receive your Medicare card approximately 3 months before your 65th birthday. If you apply for Medicare, you should receive your Medicare card approximately 3 to 4 weeks later.
Now that I have Medicare, do I need anything else?
Yes. It’s a good idea to supplement your Medicare benefits with either a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Supplement and Prescription Drug Plan. Medicare has gaps in coverage with no maximum out of pocket limit. This means that Medicare beneficiaries who only have Original Medicare Parts A and B have infinite exposure to certain types of medical bills.

What do I do about coverage for my prescriptions?
If you end up choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, the plan will likely include Part D Prescription Drug coverage. If you chooose a Medicare Supplement policy, best practice would pair that policy with a Stand-Alone Prescription Drug plan.
What if I missed my Initial Enrollment Period?
If you miss your Initial Enrollment Period, you can enroll for Medicare Part A and Part B during the General Election Period. It happens every year from January 1 to March 31. When you do this, your Medicare start date will be July 1.
I already have Medicare and a plan; can you help me?
If you already have Medicare and a plan to supplement it, it’s still a good idea to compare those benefits every single year. Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plans benefits can change annually, and often do. Medicare Supplement premiums go up over time too. No what plan you are enrolled in, it’s always good to compare.
